Dogo Hot spring
Dogo, the first city with natural hot spring ever in Japan’s history
With the Taika Reformation (645 AD), each province was assigned a government official. This provence was divided into 3 areas. One region was named Dochu (what is now Imabari). The areas near this were called Dozen. And areas further away were referred to as Dogo (this is the area south of Imabari). In the modern era, the area with a hotspring (onsen) became known as Dogo and thus Dogo Hot spring was born.
Dogo Hot spring and the White Heron
Legend says a white heron with an injured leg found a hotspring coming out of a rock. Everyday, the heron would come to the hotspring and put its foot inside. The foot got better and the heron flew away. The local people saw this and tried getting into the hotspring. It relaxed their tired bodies. The sick were healed. More and more people began to use it.
Now, it is believed that the hotspring is good for health and beauty, and is referred to as “the hotspring of beauty”.
From this legend, they created a monument to the white heron inside the main building of Dogo Hot spring.
